Engineering/Maintenance Manager

Manages and oversees all aspects of maintenance and engineering at the Cloquet Plant. Responsible for directly managing the work of skilled employees on multiple shifts. Will oversee maintenance operations for the entire facility and is responsible for managing the Maintenance department to meet budget requirements. Directs in-house machine shop (prototype shop) in the production of spare parts and tooling as well as the external procurement of such items. Responsible for managing Engineering including the design, procurement, layout and installation of tools and equipment with primary focus being mechanical and process in nature. Analyzes process flow, value streams, develops performance enhancements, implements cost effective designs and monitors production results. Develops and maintains data collection for production control. Manages/updates all relevant drawings in AutoCAD.

Major Duties

  • Oversees all maintenance and engineering of production equipment, building and grounds. Ensures preventative and predictive maintenance programs are in place and functioning throughout the plant. Prepares and administers departmental budgets; ensures adherence to budget goals and is prepared to explain variances to budget, recommends and implements suitable cost reduction projects.

  • Assists with equipment redesign and rebuilds as needed.

  • Manage maintenance store room and parts inventory, identify preferred suppliers on parts and outside services, while providing cost reductions and a functioning inventory system.

  • Administers the terms of the contractual agreement between the Company and Union.

  • Assists in providing a safe working environment and in establishing safe working procedures.

  • Identifies process improvements and implements cost effective design enhancements to improve safety, reduce downtime, reduce material waste, and improve plant efficiency.

  • Identifies problems in environmental, electrical, mechanical, production, safety, tooling and quality control areas and provides appropriate solutions for the same.

  • Plans, schedules and coordinates all outside contractors/vendors while controlling costs.

  • Identify and provide training to all personnel on continuous improvement and identify troubleshooting skills.

  • Manages capital budgeting process and projects. Ensures projects are on time, to budget and achieve project objectives.

  • Work with maintenance on trouble-shooting, maintaining and improving equipment to ensure maximum efficiencies are being met

  • Oversees the continual development and updating of the manufacturing operating procedures manuals, best practices, SOP’s, workflow diagrams and AutoCAD drawings for all parts and equipment.

  • Defines responsibilities and establishes effective standards of performance of all department personnel (supervisors, indirect and direct headcount). Appraises team member performance and provides regular performance feedback. Ensures any subordinates do the same.

  • Conducts performance evaluations for subordinate employees and makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline issues and other personnel matters.

A qualified candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Engineering.


  • Five to seven years’ experience in mechanical design, process improvement and project management in an operational environment.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of administrative and management functions such as planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and controlling with regards to manufacturing. Specifically, five to seven years’ experience supervising maintenance and/or engineering staff.

  • Lean manufacturing experience

  • Experience leading Kaizens, DOE’s, first pass yield improvements and value stream mapping exercises

  • Proficient in AutoCAD

  • Experience with TPM program


  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt Certification

  • Computer literacy with MS Office, MS Project, and SAP or similar ERP system.

  • Understanding of mechanical working of a variety of production machinery.

  • Experience with state and federal health, environmental and safety rules and regulations.
